Biomedical Science - BSc (Hons)

Course Description

Biomedical science puts you at the leading edge of science today, as it transforms our understanding of health and disease. Exploring the root causes, identification and treatments of disease, you study everything from healthcare issues to research-based science, as well as considering the practical applications of biomedical science today and tomorrow. You will be examining life processes in relation to health, and how to identify disease and its causes, as well as investigating and monitoring pathological processes and treatment strategies. Subjects covered are broadly similar to the pre-clinical components of a medical degree, providing a focused experience of the structure, functioning and analysis of biological fluids, cells, tissues and the relationship of body systems in health, disease, and the environment. You will benefit from the use of our excellent £30 million Science Centre. A range of external speakers from industry and the healthcare professions ensure that you are up-to-date with the latest biomedical developments and with current laboratory practice. Members of academic staff are often ex-practitioners of biomedical science, and you will find many researchers and staff members who are conducting cutting-edge research. Research-active staff include: Professor Jameel Inal, Dr Gary McLean and Dr Una Fairbrother. With the growing demand for biomedical expertise, our graduates embark on career paths that include trainee healthcare scientists/biomedical scientists, clinical scientists, researchers and other careers within other scientific laboratories .

Career outcomes

Graduates find careers in hospital and private medical laboratories to support the work of clinicians and general practitioners, management, medical research, education and specialised laboratory work. The skills you learn are also applicable to public health (water, foodstuffs, disease surveillance), veterinary laboratories, blood banks, forensics, and pharmaceuticals development. Graduates' analytical, numerical and communication skills are also in demand in other careers such as accountancy, journalism, and marketing. Many students also use this type of course as an entry point into the competitive world of graduate medical studies. Others have found work with companies such as NHS pathology laboratories and The Doctors Laboratory, and various hospitals as health care assistants, phlebotomists and biomedical scientists. Students have also gone on to MSc and PhD studies here at London Met and other educational institutions. Graduates with an Honours Degree are eligible for licentiate membership of the Institute of Biomedical Science which enables them to take advantage of the benefits that this affords.
