Houston Baptist University's Chemistry Department offers a student majoring in chemistry a strong foundation in theory and laboratory practice. Laboratory courses are part of the curriculum from the freshman year through the senior year. Undergraduate research experiences outside of normal courses are available with faculty mentors and have been financially supported by the Robert A. Welch Foundation for over 25 years.

There is usually good demand for chemists in the work force. Many Houston Baptist University chemistry graduates are practicing medicine and dentistry. Some chemistry majors have gone on to graduate school and earned masters or Ph.D. degrees. Others are working in the chemical industry, in biochemical laboratories, or are practicing law. Some chemistry majors have become pharmacists and other health professionals.
