Course Description

Accounting is the language of business. At HBU, our accounting majors study a variety of accounting specialties including cost accounting, government and nonprofit, audit, taxation, and international accounting. This broad spectrum provides our students the skills needed in the marketplace. Our curriculum is designed to prepare students for the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) exam. In addition to preparing students academically, the school also prepares students for life in the accounting profession. Upon graduation, the students have extensive experience in working in groups, problem solving and critical thinking, which are vital for a career in accounting. The school utilizes its professional network to invite a variety of business professionals to campus. Whether it's providing a guest lecture, performing mock interviews or reviewing resumes, the students are getting feedback about the real world from accounting professionals. In addition, many of our students obtain internships and/or full time positions with large, international accounting firms.

Career outcomes

Students graduating with a degree in accounting are prepared to go directly into the work force or enter a graduate program in business. A master's degree offers the graduate a 10 to 20 percent starting salary premium. Additionally, accountants are frequently required to demonstrate technical competence by way of certification. The most common certifications that accountants pursue include the Certified Public Accountant (CPA), the Certified Management Accountant (CMA), the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), and Corporate Financial Management (CFM).
