The course is a one-year postgraduate professional training programme. It is concerned with the preparation of teachers in the disciplines of art, craft and design. Successful students qualify for registration as Art teachers primarily, at the second level of education. The course explores the ways in which the subject of Art, Craft and Design contributes to the cognitive, social, aesthetic, physical and cultural development of the individual. The overall aim of the course is to integrate three areas of study: The Practice of Teaching This subject deals with the development of appropriate teaching methods and skills. Students are prepared for teaching through weekly tutorials, lectures and through microteaching sessions at CIT Crawford College of Art & Design. The course provides the student teacher with direct teaching experience through professional placement in a second levels chool throughout the year. Art and Design Studies Studies are based on the premise that art teachers require the ability to teach all Art, Craft and Design disciplines within the established second level curricula. Therefore, this subject provides the opportunity for students to broaden their subject knowledge and to developteaching content. Students undertake a wide range of workshops, which are practical and theoretical studio units of varying duration. The main aim of each workshop is to familiarise the student with the particular Art, Craft or Design discipline and to establish its educational value within the teaching context. Education Studies Students are exposed to a wide range of theoretical knowledge relating to general education and more specifically to art, craft and design education. Studies include Sociology, Psychology, History of Education, Philosophy and Subject Methodology. Provision is through lectures at CIT Crawford College of Art & Design and at University College Cork.
