Ask a Counselor

NCLEX

Overview

The NCLEX-RN is required for a candidate to obtain a license to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in the United States. The exam is a nationally standardized exam offered across the US and selected sites overseas. It tests for minimum competency to practice nursing.

Structure

The NCLEX-RN is a computer adaptive test (CAT). Candidates answer between 75 and 265 questions given in a maximum of six hours. The questions are chosen by the computer according to the level of difficulty and the area of the test plan.

The test content is based on the knowledge and activities of an entry-level nurse. The test questions are written by nursing faculty and clinical specialists. The NCLEX-RN asks integrated questions because in the “real world”, patients have multiple problems and needs.

Registration

Students schedule an individual time, date and locations to take the NCLEX-RN. The exam fee is $200. (www.ncsbn.org).

Students should contact the state board of nursing in the state they plan to practice nursing to obtain information about how to schedule a date and time to take the NCLEX-RN at a Pearson NCS center.
