Smart Energy Systems - BSc (Honours) in Computing(Level 8)

Course Description

This programme prepares you for a career in the energy technology sector. It will provide you with the skills to design computing and hardware solutions for energy systems. These skills are in high demand and there are also options for further study. You will learn how to: * Design and build desktop and mobile apps to manage energy systems. * Construct hardware systems to gather energy usage information. * Use computer to work with and manage energy data. * Connect smart energy technologies to building and make them work together. ​Energy technology applications and systems are used in all aspects of managing energy production and usage. Examples include smart meters, household energy systems, electric car charging stations, building control systems, solar panel arrays and wind turbines. Whether you want to work in a large multinational company, a small indigenous Irish company or an innovative start-up, graduates with a knowledge of computing and energy systems are much sought after. Companies involved in the food processing, pharmaceuticals, beverages and energy management sectors are looking for graduates with computing and energy systems skills.

1 The programme offers an opportunity to study a unique, multidisciplinary programme that meets today’s rapidly expanding need for a sustainable energy industry. LIT-Tipperary is the first Irish third level college to develop a multidisciplinary energy studies programme that combines computing and sustainable energy, this programme was developed in consultation with industry and government agencies. 2 Experience state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities that expose you to cutting-edge technology and be the first to experience new breakthroughs in research and development. LIT- Tipperary has recently taken delivery of a number of new sustainable energy technologies so as to provide students with hands on practical experience in monitoring, assessment and design of new solutions to maximise energy efficiency. LIT-Tipperary is also a partner in monitoring energy performance generated by the monitoring systems installed in 100 houses as part of the EU SERVE Project, as well as data from Eco village in Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary which include Ireland’s largest Solar Array, District heating and passive standard buildings. 3 The Smart Sustainable Energy degree prepares students for this challenging and rapidly expanding field, covering the development and design of innovative sustainable energy computing solutions that are essential to support the development of Ireland’s smart green economy.
