Course Description

Hoping for a career in the fast-paced world of multimedia journalism? With a unique industry focus and accreditation from the British Journalism Training Council, Southampton Solent University’s multimedia journalism programme can help you to develop essential editorial skills for digital, print and broadcast media. This course is accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC). This tells employers that the curriculum follows strict standards set by the journalism industry itself. Teaching is handled by an academic team with extensive industry experience. The team can use this experience to help support students while they look for work placements and freelance opportunities. The course team also includes associate lecturers, who teach on a part-time basis while still working in the industry. This gives students a unique insight into working life and even greater access to opportunities. Students have free access to a range of industry-standard facilities, including our recently refurbished media centre. Additional facilities include green screen studios, a Mac-equipped newsroom, several multi-camera TV studios, eight radio studios, Reuters, Sky and IRN news feeds and the latest professional media editing software. The curriculum is built around practical insights into the journalism industry. Past students have benefited from access to live projects and prestigious guest speakers. Southampton Solent University promotes a culture of cross-disciplinary collaboration. Journalism students can work on joint projects with photographers, stylists, film crews and make-up artists.
