Diploma in Applied Fitness

Course Description

During the first year (certificate) you'll gain a good understanding of the body and how it responds to exercise and training. During the second year you'll learn to apply this knowledge to all parts of the community in both group and individual settings. The transition from science and knowledge to individual and group application is a key focus of the programme. You will develop your own philosophy of fitness which will in turn develop your approach to practice; ultimately enhancing the industry that you go to work in. The second year of the diploma has fewer course but these are in greater depth and at a higher level. Completing the diploma will allow you to work in the fitness industry both in a structured facility and in the community. On completion of this programme you can go on to study the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) Bachelor of Sport & Recreation on the Nelson campus.

Career outcomes

Graduates from this programme will be able to work in the fitness industry both in a health centre and in the community. They will be able to assess client fitness and provide advice on fitness and lifestyle matters that is consistent with current scientific knowledge and accepted professional practice within the industry. Graduates of the Diploma in Applied Fitness also have the option to transfer to the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) Bachelor of Sport & Recreation.
