Diploma in Aquaculture (Fish Farming and Fishery Management)

Course Description

There is a need for qualified and professional people to work in the aquaculture industry. You’ll gain knowledge and skills in aquaculture systems, how they work, and how to best manage them. On the programme you will have on average one field trip a week and experience work placements. You will also become familiar with basic aquatic species biology, aquatic ecology, managing people in the workplace and business management. The programme is practical and allow to you to get out into industry quite quickly and with a qualification. This programme was developed in consultation with industry including, New Zealand King Salmon, Sealord, Aquaculture New Zealand, Aotearoa Seafoods and Marine Farming Association of NZ.

Career outcomes

Successful graduates of this programme will be able to effectively and confidently apply themselves within the aquaculture workforce as operators and technicians on a pathway toward management. They will be able to evaluate and fin fish and shellfish, how to set up and maintain aquaculture systems, and how to best manage an aquaculture team. Graduates may also go on to further study such as a degree in Aquaculture and Marine Conservation. Graduates of the Diploma in Aquaculture (Fish Farming and Fishery Management) can gain roles in Commercial Aquaculture Research Sales and Marketing Enhancement Culture Fisheries Consulting.
