Course Description

The first year of the degree will provide you with a solid foundation in business and management. In years 2 and 3 you will specialise in your chosen major, Accounting, Management or Marketing for a single major, or two of these if you choose to do a double major. A single major qualification can be completed over 3 years’ full time or equivalent for part time study, for a double major you will need to allow 3 and a half years’ full time study or equivalent to complete your qualification. The Bachelor of Commerce programme is a blend of both theoretical and practical, with an emphasis on applied knowledge and skills. With any of the three majors you will develop general management skills (e.g. communication, presentation, interpersonal and problem solving skills) in addition to the specific business skills for your major. Our Bachelor of Commerce is strongly industry orientated. We are continually seeking local and national industry input into the programme structure, content and direction. A Local Advisory Committee assist the Programme Area in assessing the continued relevance of our degree. Industry practitioners and business experts often come in as guest lecturers. The project and assessments you will complete during the degree are continually assessed and developed to make sure you will graduate with relevant skills to the local and regional economy.

Career outcomes

When you graduate from this programme you will have gained a sound understanding and awareness of the New Zealand business environment, and its place in an international context. You will have effective oral and written communication, the ability to work effectively in a group, good analytic and research skills, ethical/cultural/political and environmental awareness in the context of business, an enquiring and critical attitude and ability to apply theoretical concepts to solve practical problems. Though this programme you will gain business skills that will enable you to add value to a business, either as an employer, employee or business owner. A Bachelor qualification will also open up options for further post graduate study at NMIT or other institutes. In addition to the above general business skills, you will also develop specialist knowledge in you major/s. Accounting major If you want to gain membership of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) as an Associated Chartered Accountant (ACA) or CPA Australia, you will need to complete the Accounting major. As a graduate of the Bachelor of Commerce with an Accounting major you will be able to understand and process accounting information in a range of business environments. You will be able to apply conceptual and technical skills to assess cost determination and control in manufacturing and services industries. You will be able to prepare a full set of financial statements in accordance with general accepted accounting practices in New Zealand and to collect, critically review and communicate information effectively in both written and oral form to a wide variety of audiences, including other accounting experts. Accounting majors can find careers in chartered accounting, financial management, corporate accounting, taxation, auditing and business consulting. To further your study you may choose to complete a Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting to become a Chartered Accountant. Management major As a graduate of the Management major, you will have the ability to think strategically and understand strategic issue facing organisations, develop and implement policy in the areas of operations and general management, and understand costing and financial management processes. You will also be able to solve problems, both independently and as part of a team and be able to collect, critically review and communicate information effectively in both written and oral form to a wide variety of audiences, including other management experts. Management majors can find careers in production management, supply chain or logistics management, human resources management, project management or, after a few years in the business environment, general or strategic management. Marketing major Graduates with a Marketing major will be able to apply basic marketing concepts to complex real-world scenarios such as formulating marketing plans, conceptualising and evaluating promotion campaigns and making reasoned trade-offs between objectives and budgets and to innovate and manage change via a strong grounding in the realities of social, economic, and technological change processes, the underlying dynamics of consumer and industrial buyer behaviour, contemporary marketing research practice, and organisational behavioural principles.. You will also be able to solve problems, both independently and as part of a team and be able to collect, critically review and communicate information effectively in both written and oral form to a wide variety of audiences, including other marketing experts. Marketing majors can find careers in marketing and sales management, product management, merchandising, services marketing, market research, brand management, customer services management, key account management or, after ten years or so within a sales and marketing environment, general management.
