Civil Engineering

Course Description

Civil engineers use mathematics and the pure sciences of biology, chemistry and physics as the bases for the applied engineering sciences of fluid, particulate (soil) and solid mechanics. These engineering sciences form the rational framework for analyzing a wide variety of applications involving environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation and water resources problems. Civil engineers are involved in both the design and construction of facilities that affect all aspects of human life. Undergraduate Program The Civil Engineering program at Manhattan College was founded in 1892 and has continued without interruption since then. It is the oldest engineering degree program at the College. Over the years the program's curriculum has been broadened to include environmental engineering and, most recently, construction management to meet the changing needs of society.

Career outcomes

Civil engineers design and supervise the construction of roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and water supply and sewage systems. They must consider many factors in the design process from the construction costs and expected lifetime of a project to government regulations and potential environmental hazards such as earthquakes and hurricanes. Civil engineering, considered one of the oldest engineering disciplines, encompasses many specialties. The major ones are structural, water resources, construction, transportation, and geotechnical engineering. Many civil engineers hold supervisory or administrative positions, from supervisor of a construction site to city engineer. Others may work in design, construction, research, and teaching. Some careers of interest for civil engineering majors include: Air Transport Engineer Architectural Engineer Civil Engineer Civil Engineer Technician Construction Engineer Consulting Engineer Ecologist Engineering Educator Environmental Engineer Geological Engineer Geologist Geotechnical Engineer Highway Engineer Hydraulics Engineer Hydrologist Industrial Engineer Mechanical Engineer Mining Engineer Petroleum Engineer Photogrammetrist Pipeline Engineer Public Works Engineer Research Engineer Safety Engineer Sales Engineer Structural Engineer Transportation Engineer Urban Planner
