Computer Engineering

Course Description

The application of computer-based technology is growing at a phenomenal rate. In fact, it pervades our lives. As a result, there is ongoing demand for engineers who can build complex systems that integrate computer hardware and software. This has given rise to the field of computer engineering. By combining the core courses in electrical engineering and computer science, the computer engineering curriculum prepares students to enter this challenging new field. Undergraduate Program A liberal choice of technical electives accommodates a broad spectrum of educational objectives. Those wishing to prepare for an advanced degree may do so by selecting advanced theoretical courses in computer science or electrical engineering. Those wishing to obtain breadth in general engineering practice may do so by choosing electives in engineering science or other engineering disciplines.

Career outcomes

Computer engineers who work in hardware: research, design, develop, test and oversee the manufacture and installation of computer hardware, including computer chips, circuit boards, computer systems and related equipment such as keyboards, routers and printers. Computer engineers who work in software: design and develop the software systems that control computers. The work of computer engineers is similar to that of electronics engineers in that they may design and test circuits and other electronic components; however, computer engineers do that work only as it relates to computers and computer-related equipment. The rapid advances in computer technology are largely a result of the research, development and design efforts of these engineers. Some careers of interest for computer engineering majors include: Chief information officer Chief technology officer Computer-aided designer Computer animator Computer applications engineer Computer operator Computer programmer Computer science engineer Computer security specialist Computer service technician Database analyst Database manager Data entry equipment operator Date entry manager Data processing department manager Electronic data processing auditor/trainer Educator Entrepreneur Hardware sales/service person Mathematician Operations manager Robotics technician Software engineer Software package developer/marketer Software salesperson Statistician Systems analyst Systems consultant Systems manager
