Course Description

Develop your talents, define your artistic vision and explore ideas through experimentation, while you learn the practical skills and professional practices you'll need to for a successful career in art and design. During your studies, you will develop your core technical skills and gain an understanding of the current influences that underpin 2D and 3D design. Your core subjects include ceramics, wood, fine metals, fibre, intaglio, screen printing, textile printing and wood. In your second year of study you will choose a minimum of two electives which include concept art, contextual studies, drawing, illustration, photography, 3D studies, digital audio and visual, print studies and virtual imaging. This provides you an opportunity to focus your core subject area or to take an elective course that will provide a different experience and understanding of your applied visual art specialisation. You will learn to value of the work development process, exploring your creativity with room to think, take risks, and present your strongest ideas. Your projects become more challenging, complex and rewarding as you learn how to initiate, develop and create innovative works. This degree also features the skills you need to begin your career as an independent artist or designer. We cover all aspects of studio set-up, the principles of self-employment and effective methods for promoting your work. You will take part group exhibitions and large scale events to celebrate your work and showcase it to the public. Places are limited and early applications are encouraged.

Career outcomes

With this qualification, you can work in companies or independently as an artist, designer or craftsperson. Our graduates work across areas like jewellery, ceramics, sculpture, illustration, fabric design and printing. They also take on design studio roles in galleries, museums and theatres or art departments for film and television productions.
