Course Description

This is a well established course that is designed give you a broad knowledge of all the issues relating to agriculture and the skills, techniques and attitudes essential for success in the agricultural industry which continues to be a significant contributor to the UK economy. Course features A two year programme of study designed to prepare you for a career in one of the UKs most vital industries, agricultural food production. You will study a range of topic areas, where dependant on learner numbers there may be the opportunity to specialise in a livestock management or crop mechanisation in the final year of study. During the course you will attend a rangeof lectures these are followed by practical sessions, where you can put theory into practice and vice-versa. Topics studied are a range of Livestock husbandry units (Beef, Dairy , Sheep), Crop Production (Arable, Grassland, Root and Field Veg) Science (Animal, Soil and Plant) Business, Mechanisation, Estate Skills and an Investigational Project. Work experience is considered a vital element of the programme and you will be required to undertake 1 day per week or equivalent over the 2 years of the course. In addition to the main programme various short courses are offered. Courses may include Tractor Driving, Forklift Truck Driving, ATV, Saf use of Veteniary Medicines, First Aid and other Certificates of Competence. For those learners who do not achieve or better in Maths and or English, there will be an expectation to further study and raise these grades. During the course we attend, where possible a range of shows and events e.g. LAMMA and the Cereals event, industry visits and farm visits. It is envisaged that learners will spend some time at our partner colleges farms in Newton Rigg to study upland and lowland management topics, farming in both high and low rainfall areas and the contrasts between farming in Cumbria and the Vale of York. Progression routes from the programme can include Foundation Degree study leading to BSc honours degree in Agriculture with Land Management.
