Counselling is a challenging yet rewarding career that has a wide range of employment opportunities. Counsellors support people to empower themselves and in the process their own lives are enhanced. The Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Counselling) is a three year full-time programme which offers an applied education for those who wish to pursue a professional career in counselling. If you are already working in the areas of mental health, education or social service, this programme will give you a formal qualification. During this applied degree you will spend 200 total hours in supervised practicum placement experience where you put into practice what you are learning on campus. While studying you will learn to: Demonstrate accurate empathy, genuineness and respect to others Have enhanced understanding and knowledge of the social, political, and cultural context of counselling Understand different cultural values Articulate a sound theoretical base to counselling Integrate your knowledge, skills, and practice in relation to counselling within an agency, school or primary health care setting Understand your own values and beliefs in relation to counselling Demonstrate an acceptable level of competence within a community agency, school or primary health care setting Understand the NZAC Code of Ethics

May lead to employment in the social services in areas that require counsellors, such as mentalhealth agencies, private practices, community agencies, or workplace support. As a graduate once you have completed the required number of hours of external supervision you will be able to apply for membership with the New Zealand Association of Counsellors.
