The Bachelor of Applied Social Sciences (BASS) programme enables graduates to pursue a professional career as a Social Worker or Counsellor. In particular, the programme is designed to enable students to demonstrate a broad knowledge of the fundamentals of social science theory and social service practice in New Zealand today. Students who complete this programme successfully will be able to: * Use critical thinking skills to analyse and evaluate information and solve problems. * Apply information retrieval and investigative techniques in a range of professional situations. * Use written and oral communication skills effectively in study and work environments. * Demonstrate self-awareness in professional and interpersonal situations. * Practise within professional association guidelines. * Implement Te Tiriti o Waitangi in social services work. * Apply professional knowledge and skills under supervision in clinical and other workplace settings. * Demonstrate community, social and global responsibility. There are eight core social science courses to be completed in the first year, before selecting a major to study in the second and third years. The majors for the BASS are Social Work and Counselling, and selection into these streams will be based on year one results and suitability for the different roles. It is also possible to complete the BASS with a double major by completing both the Social Work and Counselling majors.
