Course Description

Chemical Engineering A sculptor looks at a lump of clay and sees what it can become. It’s the same with a chemical engineer, who also takes raw materials and converts them into something wonderful — a product that’s beneficial to people, a process that’s more cost-effective or environmentally friendly, a material that’s more useful than it was in its former incarnation. Intensely creative, chemical engineers are also called ”universal engineers” because their mastery of technology and science is so broad. Our chemical engineering program will help you achieve this mastery and go on to make the creative contributions the world is looking for. Prepare for the evolution. As the push for environmental sustainability continues to gain momentum, the demand for chemical engineers to collaborate with other scientists and planners on eco-industrial projects is likely to escalate as well. Like all engineers, chemical engineers use mathematics, physics, and economics in their approach to problem solving. On top of that, they apply their knowledge of chemistry. Our program pulls in all these disciplines, training you to address today’s complex problems through careful formulation, critical analysis of inputs, creative solutions, and the ability to discern what is needed for a workable solution. Specifically, you’ll develop the ability to: Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering Design and conduct experiments as well as analyze and interpret data Design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints — i.e., the economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability factors Function on multidisciplinary teams Identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems Communicate effectively Understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
