Access to Higher Education - Art and Design

Course Description

This course is specifically for students who may not have any formal entry qualifications but whose life skills may be acceptable as an alternative. The course is free for eligible students. It is a unique opportunity for you to build up a portfolio of work and prepare you for entry to higher education within the creative arts. The course is made up of core units design pathway units. The programme starts off with an introduction to drawing and continues with projects in a variety of art and craft based areas. You will have the opportunity to undertake a period of study which focuses on the practice and theory of art and design; we aim to encourage independence and to take responsibility for your own learning so that you can confidently progress onto higher education. The course lasts for one year and you are expected to attend three timetabled days a week on average, with the times planned to fit around family life. You will be given a personal workspace and assigned a personal tutor who will provide guidance and support throughout your studies. One of our past students has progressed to an M.A course in Fine Art at the Royal College in London, and many others have also progressed to postgraduate study.

Career outcomes

The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a recognised qualification that can be used for progression to higher education such as a two year foundation degree (FDA) or a three year B.A (Hons) degree.
