Automotive Technician

Course Description

Automotive technicians repair and test motor vehicles. They disassemble, inspect and assemble engines and accessories, cooling systems, transmissions and clutches, drivelines, braking and suspension systems. Automotive technicians employ logic and deductive reasoning in diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical as well as electrical/electronic vehicle systems. BCIT School of Transportation has collaborated with the Toyota Dealers of British Columbia to provide Toyota sponsored training. In addition to receiving the Provincial curriculum, you will receive training, exposure and focus on Toyota products. The Program This entry level program provides you with the basic knowledge and practical skills needed for entry into the automotive industry. As a graduate, you may pursue a career as a general repair technician or choose to specialize in one of the many varied career paths that have emerged within the industry. Toyota Dealer sponsorships also provide a two week work practicum within this program providing you the opportunity to network within the Toyota system.

Career outcomes

Throughout British Columbia and Canada, there is a serious shortage of skilled and certified automotive technicians who are specialized in Asian vehicles. As a result, independent Toyota dealers are seeking trained apprentices. Job placement prospects are currently good and there is high probability that you will have a job waiting for you when you graduate.
