Course Description

Chemistry is the study of the molecular nature of all matter and its interactions. By providing the ability to understand the relationship between the structure of molecules, and their properties, chemistry plays an essential and central position in science and technology. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills in Australia is becoming a fast-growing area creating new and increased job prospects. There is a forecasted growth of 14.4% in the Professional, Scientific and Technical Services Industry and with this brings exciting employment opportunities and career options. Source: Employment Projections This degree: Graduating with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Chemistry at UOW will give you the knowledge and skills to apply chemistry across the full range of technically-based disciplines including solid-state physics, astrophysics, molecular biology, life sciences, geochemistry, environmental science, engineering, and health sciences. These skills include both analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as expertise in using sophisticated laboratory instrumentation, which is highly valued by employers in all sections of the economy. What you will study: You will study the fundamentals of chemistry with an emphasis on molecular structure and reactivity. In your second year you will study four core subjects: Inorganic Chemistry Organic Chemistry Physical Chemistry Analytical Chemistry. In your third year you will explore subjects such as: Instrumental Analysis Environmental Chemistry Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology Bioinformatics Organic Synthesis and Reactivity. In addition, the degree offers flexibility allowing you to choose several electives that can be tailored to your interests. On completion, high performing students considering further study or a career in research should consider the Bachelor of Science (Honours) program. This one year degree offers students a pathway to expanding their knowledge in chemistry and achieving their research aspirations.
