There is currently a high demand for graduates trained in Medicinal Chemistry. The Master of Science (Medicinal Chemistry) degree provides vocational training, together with specialised coursework and small research projects to assist recent graduates and mid-career professionals to update their knowledge and skills, and thereby improve their prospects in the job market. Your degree: This course is ideal preparation for those who wish to enhance their opportunities of working in the drug discovery industry, or are seeking to enhance their chances of gaining entry into a postgraduate pharmacy program. Students enrolled in this program will further develop their individual research skills, while being exposed to a variety of cutting edge topics such as combinatorial chemistry, rational drug design, bio-informatics and molecular design. Each of the specialist chemistry subjects taken by students offers opportunities to pursue small projects in these areas, or to learn advanced skills by participating in small group activities with leading researchers. Upon successful completion of the degree, students will be ideally placed to undertake a major research project as part of a M. Phil or PhD degree program. What you study: The program includes introductory and advanced subjects in medicinal chemistry. There is also the option to choose subjects such as Advanced Analytical Chemistry, Elucidating Molecular Structure, Bioinformatics and Biological Chemistry and Advanced Organic Synthesis and Reactivity. Additional preparatory subjects focusing on laboratory work and science communication skills are also undertaken: Fundamentals of Science Communication, Fundamentals of Science Laboratories, Fundamentals of Science Data and Current Questions in Science. Students with appropriate qualifications and laboratory skills will be awarded advanced standing for these preparatory subjects.
