Bachelor of Social Science (Education for Change)

Course Description

Education for Change intersects with the aspiration of the Social Sciences, that is, to transform lives and understand human behaviour. It reflects how education is and can be a major influencing factor to bring about change in society. This degree: The UOW Bachelor of Social Science (Education for Change) draws on a range of topics including Advocacy, Indigenous Studies, Social Equity, Social Justice, Social Policy, Gender and Inequality. Embedded within this major is the opportunity for students to undertake a Service Learning placement. There is a growing body of evidence that students who engage in service learning as part of their degree develop skills that will help them interact with a range of people, many from unfamiliar backgrounds. You can complement your degree with elective subjects or use your electives to add a minor study area from any field in the University offering cross-faculty enrolment. You also can also study electives abroad, or stay local and undertake activities to build your cross-cultural communication skills through the UOW Global Communicators program. What you will study: First year subjects include social science foundation subjects such as Psychology, Social Policy, Sociology, Human Geography, Research Methodology, Indigenous Studies, and Social Determinants of Health and Wellbeing. During your second year you'll continue to complete the common core social science subjects including social cognition and communication in learning, social policy and social advocacy. Along with the core subjects you can craft a major that specialises in sociological, cultural and applied explorations of education as an activity that shapes our present and our future. You can elect to also take a minor. Students will be encouraged to take minors in areas that directly relate to the potential application of education for change: Criminology, Health Promotion, Indigenous Education Studies and Sociology. In third year you will study Social Advocacy and Gender Studies as well as commence your Service Learning. All students will participate in a series of campus-based workshops to help them prepare, and then reflect and share their community based Service Learning experience. Through Service Learning comes greater understanding and knowledge of community, thus creating the nexus of theory and practice underpinning this major.
