Course Details

Electronic and Electrical Engineering BEng (Hons)

Course Description

This course is closely linked to the needs of potential employers including those in the automotive, aerospace, medical and power generation industries. So it’s no surprise that the large majority of our newly employed graduates are in graduate level jobs. Engineering graduates can soon be earning between £20,000 and £30,000 a year. Our engineering and technology courses help you take up these rewarding opportunities. Data from Unistats in 2012 show that, six months after graduating, around two out of three of our graduates with jobs are classed as ‘engineering professionals’. Teaching at Sunderland is kept fully up-to-date through our strong links with industry, including regional manufacturing giants such as Nissan. Teaching is further enriched by our research into areas such as automotive mechatronics, control engineering materials and structural analysis, manufacturing systems and advanced maintenance. Sunderland has excellent facilities including laboratories for electronics, robotics and programmable logic controllers. We also have workshops and advanced modelling software that is the latest industry standard. We encourage all our students to undertake a year-long placement between the second and final years, although it is not compulsory. It’s a great opportunity to get paid to put your learning into practice and to extend your experience. ‌This course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) as partially fulfilling the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. Accreditation is an assurance that our courses meet the standards set by the Engineering Council. This is the highest level attainable for any undergraduate programme. As well as increased employment potential, graduates from an accredited programme are typically able to fast track the process of achieving CEng status. Engineering scholarship: £1000 engineering scholarships are available for this course. For more information and to see the eligibility criteria, please see the Student Achievement Reward (StAR) bursaries page of the Faculty of Applied Sciences website.

Career outcomes

Sunderland has a good reputation with employers. 95% of engineering and technology graduates enter graduate level employment within six months of graduating (source: Unistats 2015). Many major blue chip employers are finding it hard to recruit engineering graduates with the right mix of skills and experience. Our course is designed to help you meet their needs and launch yourself into a rewarding career. Placements: To further enhance employability we encourage you to apply for a 48-week placement where available between your second and final year. Placements are subject to availability and interviews are required. They are usually paid, with past students having earned an average salary of £14,000-£18,000 a year depending on location. Placements are an excellent opportunity to put your learning into practice and understand the context for your new knowledge. The contacts made during placements can also be valuable for future job offers. Examples of companies that have offered placements to Sunderland students include: Jaguar Vauxhall Nissan Caterham Cars Cummins Engines Tata Steel.
