Broadcast Media Production BA (Hons)

Course Description

This course provides practical training in producing TV and radio shows. It also covers the academic study of the media, film and culture. Broadcast Media Production BA (Hons) has been awarded the Creative Skillset Tick, the industry kitemark of quality, following a rigorous assessment process by experts working in the Creative Industries. The Creative Skillset Tick is awarded to practice-based courses which best prepare students for a career in the industry. As part of your training, you will undertake a series of practical projects, making full use of the University’s TV studios, radio studios, editing suites and other facilities. In your final year, you will pitch proposals for a major project and then develop work and present it to a commissioning panel. ‌‌Practice-based modules include ‘TV Studio Operations’, ‘Radio Production’ and ‘Scriptwriting’. The course also includes two core modules in ‘Media Studies’. You can choose additional theory-based modules from a list that includes ‘Film Studies’, ‘Asian Cinema’ and ‘Popular Culture Special Topic’. The University is a very supportive environment and you will study with a like-minded peer group. We encourage you to be creative and to develop your own approach.

Career outcomes

This degree prepares you for careers in the film, TV and video and new media industries. In addition, your training in communication, team-work and creativity will be highly relevant to roles in many different businesses and in the public sector. Recent graduates from Sunderland have gained jobs with employers such as: BBC Channel 4 Sky TV MTV Production companies You could also choose to continue your studies with a Masters degree at the University of Sunderland. Work experience: In Year 2 there is a compulsory work placement that involves spending time with a media organisation such as the BBC, Tyne Tees Television or one of the region’s production companies. We help you find a suitable placement. You will also undertake a number of practical assignments, which can include live briefs from clients outside the University. You will build up a portfolio of work, culminating in a major project in the final year. Throughout the course we invite guest speakers to run workshops and master classes that allow you to relate your learning to real-life experience. ‌You have the opportunity to be actively involved in Spark FM, the 24/7 Community Radio station based in the campus Media Centre. Spark FM has won many awards including four golds at the Student Radio Awards 2012, and holds the Nations and Regions Award for Best Radio Station in the North East.
