Commercial Law, LLB Hons

Course Description

The first intake of students started on the LLB Hons Commercial Law programme in September 2015 and the Commercial Law programme aims to build on the success of our well-established LLB Hons Law programme. LLB Hons Commercial Law currently provides a programme of study that meets all the requirements of a Qualifying Law Degree (please refer to note 3 above about the review of routes into professional qualification into the legal profession) with a strong emphasis on commercial law. This emphasis is reflected in the courses studied. You will undertake two skills courses in your first year that focus on commercial problem solving and commercial awareness. There will also be substantive commercial law option courses. The programme has an emphasis on developing employability skills and commercial awareness, and opportunities for work-based learning will include a five-day work placement as part of the Year 3 Commercial Law course. As a Qualifying Law Degree, successful completion of the degree will allow successful graduates to go on to undertake the further training required in order to qualify to practise, in England and Wales, as a solicitor or a barrister (please refer to note 3 above about the review of routes into professional qualification into the legal profession). There is a focus on employability throughout the programme and the School of Law has good links with a number of employers in London, including law firms, barristers' chambers and financial institutions. Over the years we have hosted a number of guest speakers and various opportunities may be available for LLB students to apply for selection for placements, internships and mentoring schemes with a variety of employers in the legal and regulatory sectors. There is also the opportunity for LLB students to apply to be selected to undertake pro bono work advising real clients on real legal issues in our award-winning Legal Advice Centre under the supervision of qualified practitioners. Employability and extra-curricular opportunities may involve an application process which may include successfully passing a selection process. The school has a tradition of extracurricular activities, including a student-run Law Society. LLB students can apply for selection for our client interviewing or our mooting team in order to further their skills and experience. Mooting is arguing a hypothetical case in a court setting. Our LLB Hons Law students were finalists in the OUP and BPP National Mooting Competition 2014–15. From time-to-time we update our programmes to reflect changes in knowledge and industry standards, so the programme structure, mode and the courses and course structure can be subject to change from what is listed below. The availability of option courses also varies from year-to-year according to student preference, staff availability and may, for some courses, also depend on a student's academic performance. Until the academic term immediately prior to the academic term in which an option is listed to run, we are not able to guarantee that an option listed will be available. In addition, please note that some courses may only be open to certain students and may also involve an application process which may include successfully passing a selection process to take the course. For these reasons, the structure (i.e. the mode(s), the courses and the course structure) of the programme shown in this information is shown for illustrative purposes only.
