This course equips individuals with the scientific knowledge relevant to the health and fitness industry as well as the necessary professional qualifications and skills. It is principally aimed at individuals who wish to enter the health and fitness industry or those who wish to develop their career within the health and fitness industry. It is delivered through a modular mode of study blending traditional methods of teaching and learning with aspects of work-based learning to ensure that individuals can draw on the work-based responsibilities that they undertake in each academic year. As such, the course integrates academic knowledge within the vocational competencies required by the work-place. The work-place is the focus through which some of the learning experience takes place. In the first and second year of the course students will undertake a work-based placement in a local health and fitness organization be it their existing work place or a work placement organized in conjunction with the college. The normal pattern will involve a work-based placement for 6 hours per week in each of the normal teaching weeks of each Semester–normally on a Thursday or recognised alternative based on an individualised course of study. Students will be assigned a mentor from within the organisation in which they are carrying out their work-based learning and they will be involved in assessing their professional ability and competence to undertake their role as a practitioner within the industry. This work-based learning opportunity is therefore a fundamental part of the learning experience and it should be viewed as an opportunity for students to gain the essential experience, knowledge and skills that will make them an “employable” professional.
