This course invites students to study some of the best texts ever written in the English language, from medieval through to contemporary, and to consider not just their authors and the social and cultural contexts of their work, but also the language they are made of. Students learn how language is used in social, political and institutional contexts in order to shape knowledge, control public opinion, build community or distribute power. The media aspect enables students to learn through the study and experience of emergent trends in contemporary media cultures. We encourage learning within a context that encompasses a wide range of subjects and types of study, with an emphasis on preparing students for work in the media, cultural industries and beyond.
