Course length: One year FT, two years PT or with a placement. This course provides you with a strong grounding in microbial genetics and molecular biology. You will explore the process of designing microbial diagnostic assays and consider the theories and rationale relating to techniques such as culture based diagnosis and sequencing for infectious disease diagnostics. This course is aimed at students wishing to be fully prepared for research work on graduation, but who have limited practical laboratory experience from their first degree. Through studying 60 credit points (CP) of taught modules directly related to acquisition of research skills and a 60 CP Research Project you will emerge as a well-trained researcher with good prospects for further study to PhD or to directly work in industry. You will be working with experts in individual disciplines and will have the opportunity to study a variety of aspects of your discipline of choice.

Knowledge and skills acquired will depend on the modules you choose, reflecting your interests, and be directly relevant to your career and professional development. The courses also aid your understanding of the advantages, limitations and applications of a range of fundamental and specialised methods in biosciences.
