Write dramatic imaginative work to reach diverse audiences and in your final year complete an extended writing project. Be guided through the creative writing process and begin new work in your chosen genre including fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction and screenwriting. Receive constructive feedback from lecturers to advance your writing; study New Zealand, Pacific and contemporary world literature; and read key Shakespeare, modernist and postcolonial works in guided reading laboratories. Meet publishers, booksellers and celebrated writers to keep you in touch with the latest industry practice. Take part in local writing festivals, spoken word performances and poetry slams. In your final year you'll work on a book-length manuscript, a screenplay, or on collaborations with performing arts and visual arts students. At MIT our lecturers are some of the best writers in New Zealand, and our students are published in leading journals and publications. We are the only programme in Auckland to teach the noted University of Iowa creative writing workshop method, where students critically discuss each other's work. With your final-year projects you can explore, plan and present your ideas as an individual or group. All of our disciplines are housed in the same building to increase your opportunities to collaborate and to reflect the real world of the creative industries. Our culturally diverse students bring different perspectives and influences to our community. Small class sizes and flexible learning options mean you get all the support you need to realise your ideas.
