Course Description

This programme aims to provide you with a pragmatic and professional approach to engineering and designing new products. You will learn how to use technology in innovative ways to make things work, and how to research and explore materials and production methods to make exciting yet realistic proposals for new machines and products. You will undertake live projects with external industrial and manufacturing companies that will boost your employability skills. Throughout the programme we will develop and support your knowledge and skills in design, science, prototype making, computer aided design, project management and communication. Industrial and cultural visits will challenge your views and expose you to new design and technological thinking. You will extensively use high-tech equipment such as rapid prototyping facilities and water jet cutters in our specialist workshops. At the end of your degree you will present your work at a professional show and in a published yearbook, both of which are viewed by industry representatives and practising designers.

Career outcomes

There is a national shortage of graduate engineers, particularly those with an accredited BEng qualification, making our graduates highly sought after by employers. Engineering graduates enjoy one of the lowest unemployment rates and one of the best starting salaries. Our recent graduates occupy a wide variety of roles in engineering consultancies, manufacturing, aircraft design and manufacture, automotive and railway engineering, steel manufacturing, naval engineering, water companies and the nuclear fuels industry. Further to this, employers outside of engineering also recognise the skills and problem-solving capacity of the engineering graduate, and there are opportunities in sales, commissioning, finance and management.
