BSc (Hons) Human Biosciences

Course Description

Through theory and practice this course aims to develop a broad appreciation of human biology and its significance to the contemporary world. You will gain a deeper understanding of human function and structure; the causes of abnormalities in humans and the consequences of human action. Group work encourages you to develop key skills in teamwork and communication and you will be trained in the scientific techniques used to study human beings. Typical areas of study include human physiology, biomolecules, cells and micro-organisms, human neuroscience, and infection and immunity. Your final year individual project allows you to focus and develop your academic interests. The degree is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology.Features & benefits of the course. Placement options The sandwich route gives you the opportunity of undertaking a 12 month employment placement during Year 3 of the course. Flexibility allows you to focus your studies within defined aspects of human biology. We have new high spec teaching and research laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment including a ground-breaking point-of-care testing and clinical skills lab, blood biochemistry, biomechanics, motor control and exercise performance labs, a purpose-built facility for the advanced practical study of physiology and a £3m building for research in genetics, cell biology, nutrition, orthopaedics, gerontology, exercise science and bioengineeering.

Biomedical and healthcare science graduates may go on to a range of subject-specific careers in the biological, pharmaceutical, clinical, medical, public health and other associated industries. Recent graduates have gone on to secure employment in laboratory/research work, the pharmaceutical industry and medical communications.
