Career outcomes

The global shift by business and government toward sustainable development is creating a boom in opportunities for those skilled in the design, construction, retrofit and operation of energy efficient buildings and the implementation of renewable energy technologies. New building codes and development standards have raised the bar on energy efficiency requirements. Traditional energy sources are being re-examined as concerns about the rising costs of fuels and infrastructure, interruptions to supply and the environmental impact of legacy systems is questioned. These conditions have created exciting opportunities for work in green building and renewable energy projects. Humber’s Sustainable Energy and Building Technology program is your entry into this dynamic and evolving field. Graduates can work in project management roles in the green building sector for both renovation/retrofit and new construction projects. These roles may include energy auditing and modelling, energy performance simulation, or the design and operation of building automation systems. Ontario’s Long-Term Energy Plan calls for a shift from centralized to distributed electricity generation, with emphasis on conservation and demand management, as well as promoting renewable energy technologies, particularly solar and wind. Opportunities include: – sustainable energy project manager – energy auditor/analyst/modeller – sustainable building technologist – sales manager – technical support specialist – government energy policy analyst – sustainable project supervisor/manager – business operator. Work Placement The Sustainable Energy and Building Technology program features an optional sustainable field experience of 400 hours (minimum). This offers practical experience in the energy efficiency, green building or sustainable energy industry sectors following semester four. Students must complete a career management workshop to help develop effective job and field experience search skills prior to the work experience. Humber works with business, industry and government to identify work placement opportunities.
