Course Description

The course has been designed to attract students with an interest in global and local social challenges from an interdisciplinary social sciences viewpoint. Small group and individual tutorials ensure that you are supported in your personal, academic and professional development by staff who get to know you well and can help you to access wider University services effectively such as international experience, welfare, technology, study support and careers services. Teaching staff are well qualified academically and also have backgrounds and continuing engagement with professional fields such as voluntary sector management, community development, youth work, teaching and social housing. This means that they can authentically apply theory to practice and give examples to bring social sciences alive and make the degree relevant to your future career interests. Support for employability is integrated in the whole course from tutorials to taught sessions and assessments, preparing you for the world of work during and after University.

Career outcomes

BSc (Hons) Social Sciences graduates can pursue careers in social research, policy making, welfare, advice, community development, international development, and management in the public, private and voluntary sectors. The course is also good preparation for related job roles such as Marketing, Human Resource Management, Public relations, Corporate Social Responsibility and Journalism. Post Graduate qualifying Masters within the School allow graduates to gain a professional qualification such as Social Work or Career Guidance. The degree enables successful graduates to meet the entry requirements for a wide range of taught Master’s degree programmes. Alternatively they can register for a research degree. Another option open to our graduates is to apply to one of the many graduate training schemes.
