Course Description

Science and technology studies is a field that draws on the full range of disciplines in the social sciences and humanities to examine the ways that science and technology shape, and are shaped by, our society, politics, and culture. Science and technology studies explores current controversies, historical transformations, policy dilemmas, and broad philosophical questions. At UOW, Science and technology studies addresses complex real world problems such as global warming, or how to regulate scientific research. It combines sociological and historical perspectives on science, technology, medicine, and develops the skills to analyse and advise on technological and environmental policy. What you will study: Science and technology studies draws subjects from four topic areas: history and philosophy of science, technology and medicine sociology of science and technology science and technology policy environmental history and sociology. In Science and technology studies, you can study everything from Galileo's conflict with the Church over his sun-centred theory of the cosmos, to international law relating to biotechnology regulation and policy responses to climate change. As well as your Science and technology studies major, you must elect a minor or a second major from the Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts.
