Course Description

Cultural studies is an innovative field of inquiry that explores the production of culture, with a particular concern for the operations of power in everyday practice. Themes and topics include everyday life, global media and cultures, race, sexuality, identities, and the body and emotion. Core subjects will teach you about contesting cultures, culture and the creative economy, the culture of everyday life and ordinary lives in a diverse world. As well as your Cultural Studies major, you must elect a minor or a second major from the Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts. What you will study: A UOW degree in Cultural Studies can be tailored to the following themes and topics: Emotions and embodiment: Emotions are not simply biologically generated phenomena, but rather are defined and enacted by and within the discourses of culture. Culture and Identities: The question of how we understand ourselves and the ways in which that understanding is forged in a cultural context is at the heart of contemporary cultural studies. Global Cultures: The processes of globalisation has made the boundaries of culture porous and global media networks have been central to this process, as well as international movements of people and the diffusion of different languages.
