Course Details

Bachelor of Communication & Media Studies (Global Media & Communication)

Course Description

Global media and communication explores the role of media such as film, television, games and the Internet in shaping local, national and global identities. With a strong focus on social justice, this major addresses the power of media communication to influence global debates on issues ranging from climate change to war, global inequalities and the movement of refugees. We look at how people negotiate global media in everyday life and at the political, social and cultural dimensions of global media industries. This major strengthens student skills in negotiating cultural difference and prepares students for a globalised workplace. The Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies enables students to broaden their career options by combining the study of global media and communication with one of three other majors in the degree: marketing communication and advertising, digital media, or journalism and professional writing. In year one of the degree, students take subjects in all four majors before deciding on areas of specialisation. This is an ideal degree for students who are interested in more than one area of media and communications and students who are not yet sure of their career path and want to retain some flexibility. What you will study: Core subjects study global media institutions and their users in everyday life and debate the political questions surrounding the emergence of powerful global media corporations and the cultural impact of worldwide flows of music, film and other forms of popular media across national borders. You will develop your skills in negotiating cultural difference and diversity, and will be able produce and interpret media content within a diverse range of local, national and international contexts. The global media and communication major is complemented very well by language studies: choose from French, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin or Spanish, or when undertaken with International Studies (BIS).
