Studying in a faculty The University has four faculties and each course leading to a degree is administered by one of these faculties. You will belong to the same faculty throughout your time with us and most of the subjects you study will be offered by schools or departments within this faculty. Admission to the BSc (Hons) Biology and Economics programme of study is through the Faculty of Science. The programme details of this course are provided by: School of Biology: The School of Biology is one of the leading departments of Biology in the UK offering a wide breadth of biology degrees from Marine Biology to Molecular Biology. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), 95% of Biology’s research was judged to be ‘world leading', 'internationally recognised’ or ‘excellent’ which complements our excellent grading in teaching quality and consolidates our commitment to research-led scholarship. School of Economics and Finance: The School of Economics & Finance brings the excitement and understanding from the latest cutting edge research into our teaching. We are consistently ranked the top Economics School in Scotland. Our research was highly rated in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) with 55% of our research rated as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. We build a structured and rigorous foundation of economic concepts, principles, analysis, techniques and knowledge. Our strengths are in applied theory, dynamic macroeconomics, finance, household economics, competition, innovation and climate change. Distinctive features of this course As a Joint Honours degree student you will study both subjects equally offering you a wide choice of options within subjects. You will have the opportunity to study across the range of Biology, incorporating substantial practical and field training, and development of quantitative skills. There are a number of specialist topics for you to engage with including a choice across the research areas of the School of Biology, experiments in economics, economics of innovation, globalisation and international trade, financial economics and law and economics. The background of many of the teaching staff, who as well as being experienced academics, have extensive experience working for, or advising, a number of organisations such as the Council of Economic Advisers to the First Minister, the Bank of England, the European Central Bank (ECB), HM Customs and Inland Revenue and the Calman Commission.
