Studying in a faculty The University has four faculties and each course leading to a degree is administered by one of these faculties. You will belong to the same faculty throughout your time with us and most of the subjects you study will be offered by schools or departments within this faculty. Admission to the BSc (Hons) Biology and Geology programme of study is through the Faculty of Science. The programme details of this course are provided by: School of Biology: The School of Biology is one of the leading departments of Biology in the UK offering a wide breadth of biology degrees from Marine Biology to Molecular Biology. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), 95% of Biology’s research was judged to be ‘world leading', 'internationally recognised’ or ‘excellent’ which complements our excellent grading in teaching quality and consolidates our commitment to research-led scholarship. School of Geography and Geosciences: The School of Geography & Geosciences is an interdisciplinary community structured into two departments: Earth & Environmental Sciences and Geography & Sustainable Development, both offering several degree options. The School's mission is to promote world-class teaching and research across a broad spectrum of Geography and Geosciences. The Department of Geography & Sustainable Development is a leading centre for geographical scholarship. It integrates the study of the earth system with its landscapes, peoples, places and environments. The Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences is part of a rich and ongoing tradition of research aimed at understanding our planet. Our teaching is research-led and in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) our research was judged to be 'internationally excellent'. Distinctive features of this course As a Joint Honours degree student you will study both subjects equally offering you a wide choice of options within subjects. You will study a broad foundation across the range of Biology and Geology modules. The programme progresses to modules in cellular, organismal, and environmental biology with options across a range of topics. It incorporates substantial practical and field training, and development of quantitative skills. You can expect to have the opportunity to engage with a number of specialist topics with a choice across the research areas of the School of Biology, from virology to marine biology, geological field mapping; igneous and metamorphic petrology; tectonics and geodynamics; geological processes and landscape evolution.
