Course Description

From making props for Harry Potter to creating wind tunnel models for Formula One, modelmaking at AUB prepares students for an exciting range of careers. It’s one of the top European courses in its field, challenging students to create a diverse world of models.

Career outcomes

Graduates of this course work in a very wide variety of industries and disciplines. The modelmaking and effects industry is varied and fascinating. The skills that it encourages are applicable to many other industries too. There are few courses that offer the range of experience that we can, and we have a very good reputation among those who are looking for reliable and well prepared graduates to employ. The annual New Blades graduate showcase, in London, is a popular event across the industry, offering a great opportunity for networking. This course is designed and run to reflect the wide opportunities for graduates. Our philosophy of ensuring that graduates have a broad skill-set and professional outlook helps to maintain very high rates of graduate employment. Graduates of this course have worked at the architectural practices of Foster + Partners, Rogers Stirk Harbour, AHMM and many others. Films including Harry Potter, Thor, Captain America, Troy and Clash of the Titans have featured the work of AUB modelmaking graduates. Recently students and graduates have been involved with: * A tactile map designed for, and installed at, the Eden Project. * Inflatable balloons for a Freeview TV advert. * Props for ‘Battle of the Winds’. Part of the Cultural Olympiad in Dorset. * An architectural model shortlisted for the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Art. * Architectural models for the Peter Cook exhibition “Crab by the Sea’. * An internship with designers in Paris. * Scale models of the Vostok capsule to support the launch of the book ‘Yuri’s Day’. * Bronze bust of Hugh Verity for the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum. * JWST model on display at the National Space Centre and the NASA website. * Development and wind tunnel models for Formula One teams. Several of our graduates now work in education, where their knowledge of effective, safe and contemporary making is ideally suited to teaching craft, art and design at all levels.
