Course Description

If you are interested in art as a central element in human society, the Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Theory can lead to a rewarding career as a museum curator, art historian, museum educator, gallery assistant, gallery director, magazine art director, photo researcher, or retail store art director. The 129-credit interdisciplinary program emphasizes the historical and social context of art, drawing upon philosophy, history, literature, religion and mythology to examine works of art and comprehend the cultures that produced them. The program is flexible enough to allow students to focus on their individual interests in art, including Art of Africa and the African Diaspora; Arts of the Americas, Ancient American Studies and Latin American Art; Art of the United States; Art of Asia; and Art of Europe. Classes are small and you will work closely with faculty who are active artists and scholars, to explore the arts of Europe and the United States, ancient American and Latin America, Asia, Africa and the African Diaspora. As an undergraduate, you will be able to take advantage of LIU Post’s extraordinary campus facilities, which range from the Hillwood Art Museum to professional studios in painting, sculpture, ceramics, print, photography and digital technology to the inspiring landscapes of our beautiful wooded campus. Another resource to draw upon is LIU Post’s strong alumni network. Our graduates can be found in many prestigious museum, galleries and universities in New York, the United States and abroad.
