Course Description

The BA Journalism course at the LCC is designed to equip students tosucceed in the demanding and rapidly-evolving world of journalism. It teaches the skills and techniques of multimedia journalism, spanning print, online, video and audio in a highly vocational environment based around the College’s multiplatform newsroom. The course is taught by taught by lecturers with extensive experience innewspapers, magazines, books, roadcasting and digital journalism . Thereare strong links with the media industry, including a programme of guestlectures and a work placement in year 2. There is a strong theoretical element to the course, placing journalism in its political, social, historical and commercial contexts and analysing the key ethical issues faced by journalists, to produce reflective practitioners. Recent graduates have found work at Vogue UK, Daily Mail, Guardian, Sky,Sunday Times, Legal Week magazine, Grazia, CNBC, Vice magazine, International Herald Tribune, Metro online, TalkSport, Press Association, The BRICS Post, City Index, and in PR/marketing or content management for companies like Samsung, Transport for London, EasyJet, Donna Karan, Sainsbury's, Media Citizens and UAL itself. Many others have established themselves as freelance writers or have set up their own companies. Programme Aims The aims of the course identify the rationale underlying the student’s educational experience and own personal achievement from studying on the course and its effect upon the student’s long term achievement and career. The BA Journalism course aims to: * Develop the practical skills of multimedia journalism underpinned by appropriate and wide knowledge of contextual subjects * Enable you to develop critical and reasoning skills through analysis of the journalistic media and discussion of related political, ethical, legal and professional issues * Develop your understanding of the theoretical, cultural and historical frameworks appropriate to the study of journalism * Enable you to become a reflective practitioner of journalism and a selfdirected, independent learner * Develop the communication and enterprise skills necessary for the effective exchange of ideas, information and team working essential to journalism * Provide the structure in which you can develop and apply in practice a wide range of research methods and skills for journalistic purposes * Prepare students for work in a range of jobs in journalism and the media Programme Outcomes The programme enables the student to demonstrate the following subject knowledge and understanding, intellectual and academic skills, practical subject skills, key attributes and transferable skills. The outcomes that the student will have demonstrated upon completion of the programme, with their associated learning and assessment strategy are: Having successfully completed the course, you will be able to: * Communicate a range of ideas, problems and solutions to a range of audiences on multimedia platforms (Communication and Presentation) * Demonstrate understanding and critical knowledge of key theoretical issues in journalism and the legal, political, cultural, economic and social contexts in which journalists work (Analysis, Subject Knowledge) * Apply a range of practical journalistic skills – written, oral, audio and video - across multimedia platforms and build up a portfolio of work (Technical Competence) * Work independently and collaboratively on presentations and journalistic projects (Collaborative and/or Independent Professional Working) * Pursue a range of potential careers in journalism and the wider media (Personal and Professional Development) * Apply research methods in journalistic and academic contexts (Research) * Experiment with different media and storytelling styles to deliver effective and engaging narratives (Experimentation) Learning and Teaching Methods The above programme outcomes are taught using the following learning and teaching methods: * Workshops * Lectures * Seminars * Directed reading * Work placement * Practical work in the College’s multimedia newsroom under the supervision of tutors with extensive journalistic experience Assessment Methods The above programme outcomes are assessed using the following assessment methods: * Tests * Reflective statements * Presentation * Portfolios of journalistic work * Essays * Projects * Research papers and reports * Dissertation * For more information, see the arts assessment pages Learning and teaching Courses in UAL span a broad range of art, design, communication, business, media, science and communication subjects. So the ways in which you learn and how your time is used will vary according to the specific course you are studying; this may be in studios, labs, classes, involve working alone, learning from peers in pairs or groups, or with external partners.
