Course Description

Develop a Design portfolio that will launch you into University and graphic or 3D, interior and spatial design studies, on this highly professional one-year progression course. Designed for those who may not have previous or recent practice in art and design and may also want to change career direction, you will be nurtured within an already specialist Arts University environment in advance of meeting the standards required to learn at degree level. You can expect … You can expect this 9 month Access course to teach you the key design principles of freehand drawing, markmaking, materials exploration, modelmaking and idea and design development. Additionally it will enable you to critically evaluate and understand your own developing skills, abilities and practice. You will build up a number of sketchbooks, that will demonstrate how you have developed your ideas and recorded information in your application of the design process, and you will learn how to write academically about your research experience. The significance of design history and theory will also inform your understanding and appreciation of this discipline, and this will extend to non-Western art in recognition of its multi-cultural context. Your creative output will be drawn together in a portfolio with special focus on how to use this to present your individual approach, which should be considered your greatest asset. There are also opportunities to attend workshops on presentation and communication techniques in order to improve your performance at interview for University. Students on this course come from a wide variety of backgrounds and previous educational experiences, particularly those who may otherwise find it difficult ‘not have the opportunity’ to participate in higher education.
