The rapid development and globalised nature of the Chinese economy is generating a need for increased numbers of Mandarin speakers worldwide. Across a wide range of business and technical sectors, there is also increased demand for people equipped to teach them. The BA in Education Studies and Chinese will provide you with an understanding of educational processes and a knowledge of education systems in the UK and beyond, alongside a comprehensive understanding of the Mandarin language and Chinese culture. You will also have the opportunity to spend a year in China to improve your language skills.

The programme will prepare students to practise effectively as language teachers, in the UK or overseas, subject to the successful subsequent acquisition of an appropriate professional qualification. As 50% of the programme is Mandarin, graduates of this degree will also be eligible to continue to initial teacher training to become a language teacher, as well as employment in primary or secondary education. On completion of this programme, you will have attained a practical level of competence in spoken and written Mandarin, as well as an informed, critical insight into key aspects of contemporary Chinese culture.
