The goal of the course is to provide health professionals, especially those interested in careers in academic neurology or psychiatry or neuropsychology, with a post-qualification course that includes taught modules in clinical and experimental neuropsychology, cognitive neuroscience and the biological basis of mental illness as well as research experience in cognitive neuroscience and experimental neuropsychology. The course reviews the theoretical underpinnings of behavioural neurology, neuropsychology, and neuropsychiatry and provides a foundation in clinical and basic neuroscience central for understanding the biological basis of mental illness. Taught modules survey the techniques of neuropsychological assessment for diagnosis of disorders of perception, attention, language, memory and executive function, and introduce students to the pathophysiology of major neurological diseases causing neuropsychological disability. Practicals at the hospital and the university include behavioural neurology case conferences, neuroimage scan reviews, and experience in computer reconstruction of brain lesions. Students explore the conceptual and technical advances that have lead to the emergence of contemporary cognitive neuroscience as an interdisciplinary quest to understand the biological basis of the mind in health and illness. Experts in neuropsychology, functional magnetic resonance imaging, event related brain potentials, magnetic brain stimulation and neural modeling offer research projects in laboratories with these state of the art techniques and supported by a neuropsychology research patient panel.
