BA/BSc Economics Econometrics and Finance

Course Description

The Department of Economics and Related Studies is a large and active part of one of the UK’s best universities. It contains teams of staff teaching and researching in core areas such as macroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics and finance. The groups in economics, econometrics and finance have a strong commitment to working with students to provide them with a good understanding of important and relevant ideas, as well as helping them to acquire valuable analytical and quantitative skills. Mathematical and statistical methods are now widely used when examining economic and financial data. In the econometric component of the course, the emphasis is sometimes on developing and understanding the tools that are used in applied economics and finance, and sometimes these tools are used with real-life data so that issues of interpretation and empirical analysis can be tackled. An appropriate background in mathematics and statistics is required for the second and third year modules involving econometrics. Therefore, admission to the Economics, Econometrics and Finance programme requires an A-level pass in Mathematics with grade B or better, or some equivalent qualification. After admission, first year students take the 'Introduction to Statistical Theory' module, which prepares them for the second-year modules. In addition to core modules in economics, econometrics and finance, there are several options that can be taken. You can see some of the optional modules that are available for the BSc in Economics, Econometrics and Finance on the content tab.
