Course Description

Duration: Four years full-time; five years sandwich Exploring the diversity and complexity of living organisms and living systems, Biological Sciences gives you a broad understanding of life in all its forms. You will develop the scientific knowledge and practical skills which can make an important contribution to the welfare of people and the environment. You will build the analytical, problem-solving and communication capabilities every employer values. BSc(Hons) Biological Sciences at UWE Bristol has an emphasis on applying biological science to the real world and takes a hands-on, practical approach to learning. Whether studying in our microbiology or genetics labs, undertaking field work on an expedition to Madagascar or a Cuban island, or studying primate ecology at Bristol Zoo, you will learn the methods and technology at the cutting edge of the field. The course explores life from the molecular level to the scale of ecosystems and you will have the opportunity to pursue your learning into the areas which interest you. The course will help you apply your academic knowledge to contemporary issues and expand your career horizons.

Career outcomes

Our students graduate with the knowledge, skills and practical experience to make a valuable contribution to the health of the community and the wellbeing of the environment. The majority of our graduates follow careers in biological sciences in particular, research and development work in the pharmaceutical, healthcare, education and agrochemical sectors. As well as laboratory-based jobs, the course equips you with the transferable skills demanded by employers recruiting for a wide variety of roles from sales and marketing to consultancy and conservation. Many graduates choose to continue their studies with MPhil/PhD research degrees or Master's courses.
