Course Description

The Bachelor of Exercise Science is a 3.5 year program that aims to produce graduates who meet the professional requirements for registration as an Exercise Scientist with the Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA). Graduates may be employed in the private and public sectors. Exercise and sport scientists provide assessment, monitoring and program prescription for fitness and exercise in a diverse range of populations from the chronically ill to elite athletes. Graduates may also be able to pursue research in exercise science or to apply for post-graduate study in areas such as exercise physiology, physiotherapy, dietetics, rehabilitation, and medicine. All years of the degree are taught at the Launceston campus of the University of Tasmania, primarily within the School of Human Life Sciences with professional practicum in Years 3 or 4 undertaken within a relevant professional setting.

Career outcomes

Graduates may be employed in hospitals, gymnasiums and private practices. Graduates can also work as sport scientists with professional teams as well as State and National Sporting Academies and Institutes. They may be employable as cardiac technicians in hospitals and surgeries. Exercise Science graduates have been employed in a diverse range of related careers such as respiratory and sleep technicians/scientists, medical sales representatives, Health/Education project officers and sports development officers. Graduates may also be able to pursue research in Exercise Science or apply for post-graduate study in areas such as exercise physiology, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, dietetics and medicine. Students interested in pursuing a career in teaching may continue their studies with a Master of Teaching.
