Mathematics Mathematics has a history in teaching and learning that goes back over 5000 years, and has formed the basis for our culture, technology, and philosophy for at least that long. Math is like music, it’s a language. Mathematics embodies the ability to see patterns where others may not. If you know what we’re talking about, are good at quantitative and analytical thinking, and are engaged by problems and patterns, then mathematics may be your calling. Thanks to the wide range of options in the math programs at UNH, that calling can take many career paths. Choose the B.A. to study pure mathematics or teach it. Our Bachelor of Arts degree gives you a broad overview of mathematics and its applications in business, economics or the social sciences. It’s the right degree for you if you wish to study the pure discipline, or you plan on becoming a math teacher. The concentration in education: We offer a B.A. with this concentration to students who are seeking a career in secondary mathematics education — a field with a very high demand for teachers! The best route to take: Participate in our Bachelor’s Plus program in education. Upon completing your undergraduate program, you’ll move directly into the graduate program in education for one additional year. At the end of the year, you’ll have a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, a master’s degree in education, and a Connecticut teacher certification.

Career Placement for Mathematics Consider the career numbers. According to a recent study, seven of the top ten careers in the U.S. were mathematics-or computer-related. Because of the mathematical breadth of our programs and their large number of free electives, UNH math majors are well trained for these careers. Recent graduates of UNH mathematics programs have landed careers as computer consultants, statistical analysts for insurance companies, scientific research analysts, product managers, high school and college teachers, and business managers.
