BA Philosophy and Law

Course Description

Our BA Philosophy and Law brings philosophy together with the practical discipline of law and provides a sound grounding in both. Moral, political and legal philosophy have implications for law, and philosophers can learn from lawyers too in various ways. Our course offers plenty of opportunity to study, not only what the law is, but also what the law ought to be.

Career outcomes

Philosophy at Essex was ranked top five in the UK for graduate prospects. This reflects our strong commitment to enabling our students to develop skills that are highly prized by employers across a diverse range of careers. As recent research into graduate prospects has shown, the study of philosophy hones skills that are indeed highly valued by employers, such as verbal reasoning, creative thinking, presenting a clearly formulated and coherent argument, analysing dense and difficult written material, distinguishing the relevant from the irrelevant, and carrying out independent inquiry. Among the careers which our students have embarked on after completing their studies are: law, local administration, PR, graduate recruitment, project management, personnel work, journalism and the media, teaching in higher and further education, librarianship, the Civil Service, charity work, banking, the police and fashion design. Others have gone on to further study, including the PGCE.
