Our BA Accounting and Finance provides a powerful combination of two important disciplines. Your second- and third-year modules provide you with an academically rigorous education in accounting and finance. Your financial and management accounting modules not only provide you with technical knowledge about the preparation of financial statements and budgets, but also the conceptual framework of accounting, the need for accounting standards and the importance of corporate governance. Your finance modules provide you with knowledge of financial theory, portfolio management, option and futures markets and how risk can be managed with the use of derivative instruments.

A ‘relevant’ accounting degree will assist you in studying for professional accounting examinations. In particular, you should be able to obtain some accreditation exemptions from the relevant professional accountancy bodies such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. For example, recent graduates of our BA Accounting and Finance have found employment as a management accountant within the NHS, a taxation accountant for Singapore Airlines Limited, a team manager for Lloyds Banking Group, and a trainee auditor for the Audit Commission. Other graduates of our School have become chartered accountant trainees with Ernst and Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and KPMG. Many of our students secure employment before they graduate. Although a good number are recruited by international, national and regional firms in the accounting profession, others choose careers in the financial services sector, working for banks, insurance companies or stockbrokers. Some find employment in industry, working in manufacturing, retail or leisure, while others follow careers in the public sector. Our courses also provide an excellent grounding for further study, such as Masters degrees and MBAs.
